Lamiastrum

galeobdelon 'Herman's Pride' This larger cousin of Lamium has shiny silver leaves with green veins. It forms a dense mound and is a great plant for contrast in the shade garden. Spikes of yellow flowers appear in late spring. Shade to part shade. Height 12-16" Zones 6-10

Lamium

maculatum Spotted Nettle This perennial is the workhorse of the shade garden. It is grown for its foliage, but it has very attractive flower spikes. It is a vigorous ground cover as well. The colors on the heart shaped leaves will fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Shade to part sun. Height 4-14". Zones 4-10

Lantana

hybrids This shrubby vine is prized for its year round color display in frost-free areas. It will remain evergreen except during an unusually cold winter.  Lantana prefers moderate to poor soil so do not over fertilize. We are offering many flower colors in trailing or more upright selections. Full sun, Zones 8-10

Larkspur

'Imperial' Series, Consolida ambigua
Annual.  A must for the cut flower garden. Upright, well-branched stems support an abundance of spurred, double flowers. Available in: Blue Spire, Lilac King, Rose, Salmon Beauty, White, and Mix. Full sun to part sun.  Height 36-48". 

Laurentia

axillaries 'Star Pastel Mix' Perennial.  Formerly Isotoma, this is an excellent selection for containers or groundcover. The flowers are fragrant, star shaped and available in a mix of pink, blue, and white. The semi-trailing, foliage is covered with blooms all summer, woody-based. Full sun to part shade. Height 12-14”. Zones 7-10

Lavendula                              

Lavender Perennial.  This is everyone's favorite herb!  The fragrant flower spikes appear in early summer (year round on the coast).  It has an upright habit creating a small woody shrub.  This plant will thrive in droughty conditions and poor soil once it is established.  Do not over water or fertilize!  A regular pruning after the flowers are spent is recommended.  Full sun.
angustifolia English Lavender
Compact, bushy habit.  Gray/green foliage and lavender flowers.Height 24-36".Zones 5-10.
'Hidcote Blue' Dwarf selection with blue flowers.  Height 10-12"
'Munstead' Blue flower spikes one month earlier than other selections. Height 16-18"

This selection is a naturally occurring hybrid between L. angustifolia and L. latifolia. Its gray-green foliage is broader than either species alone.  The flower spikes are often branched

This species has the most unique flower of all the Lavenders. It is dark purple with lighter colored "tufts" extending out of the top of the flower. It has narrow gray foliage and reaches a height of 24”

Layia

platyglossa Tidytips
Annual.  This California native has single yellow flowers with white tips atop finely divided leaves. It will add a soft touch to the front of the border. It also makes a great cut flower. Full sun. Height 10-12”. Zones 8-10

Leontopodium           

alpinum Edelweiss Star-shaped, silver-white floral bracts atop gray foliage. Resembles miniature starfish. 6”, needs excellent drainage, don’t over water. Zones 5-9

Leptosiphon

hybrid 'Confetti Mix' (Gilia hyb.)
Annual. These tiny plants are excellent for the front border or containers. The genus is a California native. Covered with tiny star-like flowers in a mix of cream, yellow, orange and rose, these little guys will provide a colorful display. Full sun. Height 1-2".

Leucanthemum

maximum Shasta Daisy Perennial. This daisy has fully double, white flowers on long stems. The foliage is a rich green and somewhat waxy. Full sun to part sun. Height 28-30".  Zones 5-10
‘Crazy Daisy’ Medium tall with a percentage of fully double flowers that are white with a yellow eye. 6”.
‘Silver Spoons’An absolute all around, annual or perennial with marvelous spider and spoon fashion petals. Very easy to grow. 48”.
‘Snow Lady’ dwarf variety to 10” high, 2½-3” single flowers, white with yellow centers

Lewisia

cotyledon 'Sunset Strain'
Perennial. Native to Northern California, this plant puts on a terrific floral display. The succulent foliage is covered with clusters of pink, salmon and orange flowers. It's a good idea to plant this one in 50% gravel. Full sun to part sun. Height 10-12". 

Limnanthes

douglasii Poached Egg Flower
A floriferous little wild flower, white flowers w/ yellow centers, full sun, 6” tall, 8” wide, native to marshy habitats, reseeds.

Limonium                                   

Statice
Perennial. This genus is a favorite in cut-flower gardens. The flowers are the best choice for drying.  They won't fade! The large glossy foliage is always in a rosette, and will provide interesting texture for your perennial border. Salt tolerant. Full sun.
caspia airy sprays of intricate purple-blue flowers, 24-36” tall
gmelinii 'Perestrojka' Leathery leaves. Lilac-blue flowers.  Height to 25” Zones 4-10.
latifolium bears clusters of lavender-blue or white flowers over summer, large basil leaves, good dried zones 5-10

Linaria                                          

Toadflax This diverse genus has tiny flowers, resembling snapdragons. They are a colorful addition to any garden. All species prefer full sun.
alpina, trailing perennial from Europe, 3” high with violet, yellow, white or pink flowers and narrow blue-gray leaves. Zones 4-10
purpurea  Perennial. gray-green foliage. Height to 3’ Zones 6-10

nevedensis ‘Gemstones’ blooms for many months with unusual bicolored flowers of flame, orange, yellow, pink, lilac, purple and violet on 6” plants with attractive grayish foliage.

Lithodora

‘Grace Ward’ Groundcover with blue-green leaves and cobalt blue flowers, 6-12” high and will spread to 12”, don’t over water. Zones 7-10

Lobelia

All lobelia are grown for their bright, showy flowers.  The perennial species have larger flowers and will attract Hummingbirds from near and far.  All are excellent garden performers, and will take full sun in cooler climates, some shade in warmer areas.

erinus  This is the genus that contains bedding Lobelia. However, the selections below are superior, vegetatively propagated plants. They are outstanding trailers, long bloomers, and are excellent choices for edging and baskets. Trails 12-15".  Sun to part sun.

  • valida perennial.This plant has large medium blue flowers with a white eye. It has medium green leaves, and upright habit. Part sun to part shade.  Height 11-18". 
  • valida ‘African Skies’ large deep blue flowers on dark stems with deep green foliage

Lotus

Vine Parrot’s Beak Attractive gray/silver, needlelike leaves, Cascading up to 3 ft.
‘Berthelotii’ Exotic orange-red blooms shaped like parrot’s beaks are produced in cool weather
‘Gold Flash’ Golden yellow tinged with orange

Lupinus

Perennial.  This hybrid has been a long time garden favorite.  It has huge colorful spikes of pea flowers on top of interesting palmate foliage.  Put this one where you want it, because Lupines don't like to be moved.  The colors range from yellow, red, pink, purple, ivory and glowing carmine shades. Height 30-40". zones 1-7

Lychnis

Perennial. This genus is full of rock garden staples.  All species have interesting foliage. Flowers are Hummingbird and Butterfly favorites. Keep the soil on the acidic side. Full sun to part sun.

flos-cuculi Ragged Robin Rose frilled flowers in loose panicles, Height 12-15".
flos-jovis Ragged Robin. white-gray foliage with scarlet flowers. Height 16-20" Zones 5-9
haageana a hybridized clump forming perennial to 18”, large flowers of white, salmon red or scarlet zones 6-10
viscaria 'Firebird' Magenta red flowers. Stems are "sticky" Height 16-20" Zones 4-9

Lysimachia

Perennial. This genus of aggressive creepers will add some bright colors to the shade garden. The foliage provides year round interest, and the cup-shaped flowers will add a punch in the spring and summer months. Use these plants in baskets or planters for the semi-shady patio. Part sun to part shade.
congestiflora ‘Outback Sunset’ With yellow and green variegated leaves, this plant is a head turner. The clusters of yellow blooms peak through the summer. It is a great choice for foliage contrast in baskets. Trails to 12". 
Goldi’ or ‘Goldilocks Small, rounded, gold-green foliage with golden stems-the gold color intensifies as light increases.
procumbens ‘Golden Globes This plant is a heat lover, and profuse spring bloomer. The trailing stems with thick green leaves bend upward at the tips. The clusters of bright yellow flowers appear in spring, and sporadically throughout the rest of the year. Use in hanging baskets. Trails to 2 feet. 
‘Variegated’ Light green with subtle yellow and red accent.
